Hurricane Half Marathon

Gorgeous views of Sand Hollow State Park await runners in Hurricane Half Marathon, Sept. 16

Hurricane, Utah (Sept. 13, 2017) – Stunning views of Southern Utah mixed with the glowing red rocks of Sand Hollow Resort Golf Club serve as inspiration for hundreds of runners set to tackle the Hurricane Half Marathon on Sept. 16. The event, which includes a 5-kilometer race, starts at 7 a.m., beginning and ending at the Sand Hollow Resort (5625 W. Clubhouse Drive in Hurricane).

“The Hurricane Half Marathon is like no other race in southern Utah. It is such a momentous experience with incredible scenery – how many races you have seen that run the back nine of a golf course?” said Bryce King, Recreation & Leisure Services Director for Hurricane City. “This is a fantastic small-town race with huge national sponsors including Altra, Squatty Potty and Honey Stinger.”

From the resort, the course makes a loop along the trails that wind among the fairways on the course. This nearly 3-mile-long stretch brings runners back past the starting line, and then heads east toward Sand Hollow State Park. This stretch skirts the edge of the park, which contains more than 15,000 acres of sand dunes.

King said he expects approximately 300 runners to participate – an estimated 40 percent will be from outside the area.

“This is a fantastic way to say ‘so long’ to a great summer and usher in what is sure to be a fantastic fall season for recreation in Southern Utah,” said Kevin Lewis, Director of the St. George Area Sports Commission. “A cool breeze flowing through your hair while gazing at the staggering views of Sand Hollow State Park and the sparkling blue water of the reservoir is a tremendous way to spend the morning here.”

All who complete the race will receive a large finisher’s medal, King added.

Registration continues until Sept. 15. The cost is $55 for the half marathon and $30 for the 5K. For course maps or to register, go to www.hurricanerecreation.com/hurricane-half-marathon–5k.
